A Friend of Arnold
The second studio we set up at the Arnold Sports Photo Workshop space was for a set of high key portraits.
The first studio was more for full length photos and a few tighter shots. This studio was designed differently.
First difference was a vertical cyclorama paper wall built into the corner of the room with the arc of the wall directly behind the subject. The outer edges of the paper walls extended about six feet to bounce the light back into the center of the arc’s diameter where the subject sat.
Light was sprayed onto the arc from two Photogenic 250 watt studio strobes with 36-inch baffled softboxes. The lights were aimed to slightly rim light the subjects with feathered light from the inside edge of the softbox falling onto the subject’s side.
The front light came from an Alien Bee ring light attached to a light stand.
A hand held camera shot through the ring light opening set to the center of the subject’s face. The attached diffuser helped soften the light.

All this lighting was set to create a common element so no individual lighting setup would enhance or distract from a subject’s sitting. If we had planned a set of more insightful portraits attempting to create more evocative and personality revealing images we would have had several more studio setups where the lighting would be modified to match the subject.
We also had little time between some sittings to do more than put the subjects into position, talk to them for sufficient time to make them comfortable and shoot a quick set of photos.
Given the time, we’d shoot a different set of portraits. Maybe next year.
