Thanks for being there!

I

t’s been a week since the first Arnold Sports Photo Workshop. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves and has had enough time to assimilate some of the ideas David Tejada shared. My only problem was not being able to join in as David revealed his techniques for small strobe results. I may be asking a few of you some questions in the near future.

Thanks to Midwest Photo for sponsoring the weekend, the Greater Columbus Convention Center for its hospitality, and Classic Productions, Inc. for providing us the space.

W

e’ve begun to put together the book presented to Arnold a couple of weeks after the weekend. If you stopped by the studio room you got to see the three setups we had and at the end of the day see how we worked each image for on-line publication.

There’s probably a seminar or workshop we should do about smoothing out workflow so you can process and deliver images efficiently and quickly.

The five photographers shooting the weekend collected about 40 gigs of photos of athletes in action and fans enjoying themselves. Despite having designed a very smooth workflow, 40 gigs is a lot of photos to look through, collate, process and deliver. That’s five different styles, almost as many different cameras with varying color profiles, and processing for delivery in the book, for Web sites, news releases, magazines, and internal uses. We’re just happy it isn’t film and we have to make contact sheets.

Share your work with us

O

ne of the great things about David’s seminars and workshops is the hands-on instructions he gives. Being able to shoot the same portrait he’s set up using his lights and Pocket Wizards give you a real world, take-home images that you can later examine and dissect. Having your own version of his work is valuable.

Share with us your photos from the weekend and how you’ve applied the lessons to your own work. I’m putting together a blog post about the workshop and would certainly like to show off some of the lessons learned. Send the photos to gary@garygardiner.com sometime in the next week so I can put the blog post together this weekend.

You’re not required to participate but it would certainly be fun to see your work. Include any comments you have about the weekend and let me know if they are publishable.

Let’s get together

I

‘ve arranged for us to meet for discussion and sharing at Gallery 202 in Westerville Wednesday, March 24th at 7:00 p.m. with a short detour to Old Bag A Nails just down the street when we’re done. It’s planned to be very informal but I will have a laptop and projector for any photos you want to bring along. Included will be a short show of some of the photos from the studio shoots and from the other photographers shooting the weekend for the book. We’ll discuss the results, successful or otherwise.

If you’re not familiar with Gallery 202, it’s where we have a once-a-month Meetup to talk about photography. You’re more than welcome to join us.
