Making a Moooo-ving Portrait

Outdoor portrait with Lastolite EzyBox

It was the last farmers market of the season in Uptown Westerville and although I’d visited the market every Wednesday afternoon I wasn’t pleased with most of the portraits, or attempted portraits, I’d taken during the three hours it was open for business. This day I tossed my Lastolite EzyBox in the trunk of the [...]

Small Strobes – Big Results at the Arnold

Small Strobes - Big Results small strobe lighting

The third photo studio at the Arnold Sports Festival was built on the Small Strobe – Big Results philosophy of our primary speaker at the weekend, David Tejada. David’s built a business around using small, inexpensive strobes instead of AC-powered monolights or studio strobes to light his commercial, editorial and portrait clients. His expertise is [...]

Setting the lighting stages

A Friend of Arnold - Photo Copyright Jay LaPrete

The second studio we set up at the Arnold Sports Photo Workshop space was for a set of high key portraits. The first studio was more for full length photos and a few tighter shots. This studio was designed differently.

What a great weekend!

Working the Arnold Sports Festival Photo studio with Isaac Hinds

Another three days of the Arnold Sports Festival have moved into history. Only this year it was four with an extra day of amateur events at Veterans Memorial Auditorium that required a photographer be  present. The main action for events at the Greater Columbus Convention Center was a set of photo studios set up in [...]

Continued profits in the Best Buy light

Best Buy install Nikon Creative Lighting System

I’ve shot Best Buy more times than I’d like to remember. It is a friendly company usually welcoming news photographers with a legitimate need access to their store with little more than a knock at the door. Other consumer electronics companies are prepared to physically remove news photographers from their property without any opportunity to [...]

Full sun portrait

Noon portrait flash fill manual flash

Today’s lesson uses flash in a near-noon daylight photo to create an image balancing daylight and fill-flash. The girl is standing in open sun coming through an opening between two trees. The spot was chosen because it put her right hand in the soft shadow of one tree and her head in the open sunlight. [...]

Group portrait just for the fun of it

Group portrait Nikon SB800 CLS

It was Grandparent’s Day at school and I was under instructions to shoot my 12-year-old granddaughter with some of her friends. There were really only two choices. The third, a near-full studio setup wasn’t going to happen. At best I would have just a couple of minutes to gather the kids after lunch and between [...]

Lighting an overcast day

Bikers, skateres, Nikon CLS, SB800 strobe fill

I knew when we had the first days of temperatures above freezing in 2010 and a few rain showers to melt the snow that skaters and bikers would soon be appearing at the Westerville Skate Park. The difficulty was the skies were still overcast and the light flat. That was solved with a single off-camera [...]

Active Athlete Portraits

Creating portraits of active young athletes is a set of mixed blessings.

Finding the natural moments that express the joy of competition and its associated training goes beyond standing near the finish line of an event. It also requires a good understanding of phot technique to create an image that explains the moment and the athlete.

Seeing professional photographer’s photos from major sporting events makes it look simple. Stand in the right spot with the right camera and lens combination might be all that is necessary to duplicate their result.
