I know. This doesn’t look like a very difficult photo to have taken.
It’s nothing more than a barbecue pork white bread sandwich with just a little bit of meat and sauce dangling outside the bun about the stain the white paper towel it’s sitting on.
That being said, this is one of the most popular real food photos I have in my stock collection.
This was my sandwich bought at a bbq restaurant and served on a patio table in open shade. It was nothing special. Just another artery clogging, smoked pork loving lunch in a long line of cholesterol inflating meat sandwiches I’ve consumed with several glasses of sweetened iced tea.
As always, there was a camera nearby. This is exactly as the sandwich presented itself to me. There isn’t a food designer anywhere who could have configured the meat and sauce arrangement any better. It might have looked different with perhaps a little more meat to fill the void at the center. Then, it would have looked too perfect, too perfect to have been real, too perfect to be something other than real food.
Always having a camera nearby is a requirement for all photographers. I always traipse around with my Canon G9. At right is a photo from today as I gave blood for an annual physical followup exam.
Sometimes I carry an old Nikon D70 because I prefer to use an SLR instead of the point and shoot G9. The D70 also has a smaller footprint than my D300 with the battery grip making it less obvious. I’m looking at the Canon SX1 for a new addition to the small camera collection.
If you want to be a photographer, never go anywhere without a camera. Never be afraid to use it, no matter the place.
It’s important that you never miss an opportunity for a good photo. You never know when lunch might be the next best seller in you stock collection.
